Snacks:- How, What, Where and When?

Eating is a multidimensional ritual married to cultural significance and global variations. Around the world, people consume food outside the traditional meals such as breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacking is an age-old food tradition. Although some snacks such as popcorn came as early as in the 1830s, however, a paradigm shift occurred between the 1880s and 1980s when there was a shift from three square meals a day to 2 meals and a snack. In the early 20th century, longer mealtimes and greater meal frequency were associated with higher social status. The wealthy privileged class ate as many as five meals, whereas the middle/rural class had access to only three square meals.

The new niche of the food industry called snacks came into the commercial zone, as a result of the technological advancements in the food industry and the mass entry of women in the kitchen during the industrial revolution. Commercial snack production began booming during the 20th century and that’s how we world first got a taste of our forever favourite ‘snacks’.
